akeley hi nikley they apne manzil ko talashte huye

Jai hok !!!(transliterated)

tobe je bolley sob palte geche,

ekhono bhore gorer mathe futbole lathi aar gongae snan
aar brishti manei hantu jol ebong juto mathay bari phera,
aajo tiner chaley brishtir sei sobdho to eki ache

Whatever !!!(translated)
so you said everything has changed,
where? the Golfgreen-howrah minibus still plies on the same route,
still conductor hums ”dhormotolla borobazar howrah, stop ladies, slow down taxi on left’
and from Gariahat you hear melodious cry ‘lemon candy, fried peanuts, dalmut’
even today 5.10 Bongoan local means arguments related to govt. policies and fight to get into the train,
still early mornings mean football at maidan and bathing in ganga
and rains mean wading through knee deep water with shoes on your head
even today rain drops on the tin roof sound same
when they’ll turn the city into London will they change all the above?
we often say things have changed but certain things about a city don’t change in fact they should not change as it gives the city its identity…

The poem may not make much sense to people who have not lived in Kolkata, here I have tried to get a glimpse of the things which are yet to change …those little things which still make me call the city as ‘Kolkata’…

Rajtontro (Transliterated)

ora dori dhore mare taan tobe raja hon khaan khaan
kal chilo masnode aaj se dhulo chatey…
itihaas kore porihaas bole etai rajnitir riti
ishwar alla tero naam sobai ke je sonmoti den bhogobaan…
French wine, Russian vodka aar Kingfisher beer mile mise hoy eka kaar
sudiner asay oder to aguner nei dorkaar. Joy hok! Proti baar to oderi sorkaar.

PS:  There is no translation when lines are born out of wine, vodka and beer mix. So, non bangla readers please excuse.

Porichito Sombedon (transliterated)

Known Sensation (translated )
Unexplored ways, how are you? Heart wants to know,
Broken dreams, still want to touch your strewn pieces,
Even after so many years want to stand before that crossroad,
but have I changed? Still, too afraid to answer that question.

Note: As always I tried to translate but could not get it right I think….

Interpreter of Dreams

He tried to hold dreams with his tiny hands,
but, like the sands of time, they slid away.
He wanted to play with dreams as if he did with toys from toy-land,
but ,like the ice-cream they melted away.
He chased the dreams as if they were geese in his backyard,
but at his slightest movement they cackled and flew away.
He wanted to grow up quickly and live the dreams,
but now, he sits quietly in his cell and interprets other’s dreams.

(Banjara Rahi aur Woh ek Nazar)

Today, I stumbled upon 3 very old poems written by me  in Hindi at different points of time … when I read them now I found a chord between them …. just wanted to share it here …tried to translate it for non-Hindi readers but it did not turn out as I would have loved to 😦

Translations in English

Rahi (Traveler)
You are a traveler, traveling is what you do,
and you are always in search of a destination
so, why are you sad on losing this destination
get up o traveler, tighten your shoe laces
get going, in search of a new destination
as you are a traveler, traveling is what you do,
and you are always in search of a destination

Banzara (Wanderer)
He is a wanderer
Without any address or any destination
Today he is in this village tomorrow in some other city
Keeps roaming from place to place

They say don’t ever fall for him
Cause he will fly away someday
Yet the eyes meet
In search of the fellow wanderer

Ek nazar (one look)
Your one look is all he needs
He gets restless if doesn’t see you even for a day
When you are near his heart skips a beat
It starts racing and get breathless
Why is he so impatient? What’s stolen his sleep?
Now only you can relieve him from this current state

(Carnival)

Transliterated version:

Nil akasho elo,
Tulo megheder dolerao elo,
chhoto chhoto sobuj dheu ey rao thik chole elo,
songe sada gangchiler dol keo niye elo,
Translated Version:
Blue sky had come,
white clouds too came,
along came the white sea gulls,
yellow lighthouse was already present,
and that big red steamer too came,
but all of them are waiting for you.

Reconciling with Silence

She was looking for peace, solace and bliss in silence,
But silence was scaring, silence was devouring,
Silence was dark, silence was cold,
Suddenly she was afraid of the silence.

Her heart raced and questioned the silence,
Only the machines replied from that silence,
She could listen to her heart in that silence,
She could fight the demons from her childhood fairy tales in that silence.

Silence let her be she,
Silence showed her what she actually should be looking for…

PS: This poem was composed & compiled  while on a 12 hr long flight and one of the inspirations was one of my favorite song U2 – I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For .

While sorting through some old notes I stumbled upon the lines below. They were written  in Bengali, obviously I have translated in English for non-bengali readers but as it often happens in translation the soul is lost but I think this one was very easy so it’s very close to the original.

Happy Birthday

Today, 17th Sraban your Birthday.

I still receive the email reminding your birthday every year,
You used to get annoyed on seeing the reminder for the biggest day of your life.

‘Can’t even remember this much’ you had said with a serious face,
And then added ‘This way you’ll forget me as well one day’

I used to smile and say ‘that’s why this eternal reminder’
So, even today I remember your birthday.

Another big date of your life 21st Boishak I remember too,
No! A reminder is not required for it though.

Note: I have not changed the dates from Bengali to English months as somethings should not be translated.  FYI Boishak is one of the auspicious months for marriage in Bengal.

One more thing do you think the first and last 2 lines spoiled the poem? Reason for asking is they were not a part of the original, just added by me while posting.

Update: Before this post my blog had 997 total comments and Now it has 1K ! Yay! A milestone indeed …and I am Glad that it is Neha‘s comment which got me there 😀 …Thank you all for being so generous with your views here…So Now …10K comments ? 😛

Dear Friends today I don’t have anything new to present to you as you know I am tied up elsewhere. Though I am more a prose person still let me present with great audacity  a few pieces which I call poems.  They are gathering dust in my other blog so I am just linking them here.
